Certain Nobeltec Passport chart features (including but not limited to buoys, markers, contours, underwater obstructions, etc.) may not display correctly, or at all, when used in conjunction with certain Nobeltec navigation software packages and OEM plotter solutions.
Description of Defect and Hazard Represented
When affected navigation software and OEM solutions products are used in conjunction with affected Passport charting products, certain chart features may not always and/or may not correctly display on the navigation system screen.

Missing and/or incorrectly displayed information may represent a hazard IF navigators are misusing affected products by relying solely on them for primary navigation, instead of placing primary reliance on up-to-date official government charts.

    Correction of Defect
Immediately upon their availability, Jeppesen Marine will supply free-of-charge:

    • Corrected and updated versions of affected charting products to current users of the affected Passport Chart Versions ("Current users" include holders of the following Passport charting product versions: Passport Versions 30, 31, 32 and 34.)

What are the fixes or enhancements that are in these software updates?
These software updates contain:
  1. Corrections to some of the color contrasts within the night mode to allow for better visibility of the chart objects.
  2. Critical fixes to the Admiral and VNS Product baseline to fix chart rendering issues associated with safety of navigation. Certain Nobeltec Passport chart features (including, but not limited to, markers, contours, underwater obstructions, etc.) were not being displayed correctly, or at all, when used in conjunction with certain chart sets. This software update fixes these software issues and the newest charts (WF-37) will fix the associated data issues.

Please visit www.nobeltec.com/support/ for information on qualifying for a free region update.

  3. Removal of the S-57 import functionality. The Admiral and VNS products no longer have the functionality to use vectors charts other than the NCX charts provided by Jeppesen Marine.
What will happen to my S57 charts that I loaded previously?
The S57 charts that you may have imported will be deleted or otherwise rendered unusable by Nobeltec Admiral or VNS by this software update.

In the past Jeppesen Marine has occasionally encountered anomalies in public S57 data. When these anomalies occur it is beyond Jeppesen's control to verify that the conversion of S57 data into the Nobeltec System ENC (SENC) is performed correctly. Therefore, Jeppesen Marine has chosen not to support direct importing of public S57 charts into our marine navigation software products.

Please also remember that electronic charts are an aid to navigation designed to facilitate the use of authorized government charts, not to replace them. Only official government charts and Notices to Mariners contain all the information needed for safe navigation.

I applied the software update and my chart data has disappeared. What do I do now?
As stated, this software update will remove all S57 chart import functionality and any ability for Nobeltec Admiral or VNS to display previously imported S57 charts.

If you are in a situation where you no longer have viewable charts in your Admiral or VNS software, you may contact Jeppesen Marine to describe your situation and qualify for free data unlock codes to our Nobeltec Passport World Folio vector data product.

I have applied the software update and would like to undo or roll back the update. Can I do this?
There is no ability to back out the software updates. Once the software updates are applied they become one and the same with the Nobeltec software that was previously installed on the system that was running Admiral or VNS.
I installed a VNS or Admiral patch and all my Raster Charts went away. How do I get them back?
Installation of any VNS or Admiral patch (not just the 9.3 patch) deletes the Raster Chart catalog index files and when this happens the Raster Chart no longer get rendered in the Nobeltec application. We do this to ensure that the chart catalog format is maintained between different versions of the application patches. In most cases this maintenance operation is completely unnoticeable and transparent to the end user as the Nobeltec VNS or Admiral software products know how to automatically regenerate the catalog files.

However, if a user chooses to install Raster Chart data in a non-default location (they override the data installer and install the Raster Charts some where other than where Nobeltec suggest to install the data) then the Nobeltec patch will not know where to find the directory where the Raster Chart data is installed on the users hard disk. Therefore the Nobeltec patch cannot automatically rebuild the chart catalog index file for the user. This results in a condition where the Raster Charts do not appear in the Nobeltec program.

This condition is very easy and quick to fix. The solution to this problem is to reload the Raster Charts via the Chart Table.
- Simply open the Chart Table from within Nobeltec VNS or Admiral, click on the Install tab and choose Raster Charts in the selection drop down Menu.
- At the bottom of that screen be sure to select the 'Leave charts on original media.'
- Then use the Browse button to navigate to where your Raster Charts are loaded on your PC's hard disk.
- Once the Raster Charts are all listed in the Chart Table box, press the Select All button.
- Then press the Install button.

This action will reconfigure your system to display all your Raster Charts.

What kind of computer do I need to run Nobeltec Navigation Software?
What does the error “Error copying d:\setupvns.exe to c:\windows\temp\setupvns.exe. Error Code 32” mean?
The first time I opened my Nobeltec Navigation Software I was prompted for a S/N. Why does the “Next” button never highlight after I type it?
Why doesn’t the Site Key for my old computer work on my new computer?
I’ve just installed Nobeltec Navigation software for the first time, but whenever I try to open it I get an illegal operation about TCWFCAT.EXE causing a page fault in Chartutil.dll. What do I do?
What kind of computer do I need to run Nobeltec Navigation Software?
The minimum system requirements for Nobeltec Navigation Software are a Pentium class (or equivalent) 450MHz processor and 128mb of RAM. If you are using Windows XP, we recommend having at least 256mb of RAM. Other items are optional, like a wheel mouse or a high color printer.
What does the error “Error copying d:\setupvns.exe to c:\windows\temp\setupvns.exe. Error Code 32” mean?
You will receive this message if more than one install window has been opened. This is commonly caused be clicking to install the program multiple times on the initial setup splash window. Why does this happen? When you click to install Nobeltec Navigation Software, we start copying the files needed to install the software. When you click it twice, it tries to recopy them over, but the files are already on your computer and are in use. In Windows®, you cannot copy over files that are in use. Click 'OK' to close the message, and the install should start shortly afterwards.
The first time I opened my Nobeltec Navigation Software I was prompted for a S/N. Why does the “Next” button never highlight after I type it?
First, make sure that you are entering a 20-digit S/N, in this type of format: 0053-499132-0165-654321. There should be no spaces or characters. This S/N should be found on your Registration Card and/or the front of your documentation. If you are sure that you have the correct S/N typed in the box and the Next button still isn’t highlighted, you will need to uninstall the Nobeltec Navigation Software (START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS) and attempt to reinstall it. When you reinstall, make sure that you do not have any other programs open (I.e., virus protection, system utilities, etc) that may interfere with the install.
Why doesn’t the Site Key for my old computer work on my new computer?
We make every attempt to assign a unique Site Key to each customer, however, there are certain circumstances that will require the need for a new Site Key. You are allotted a flexible 3 Site Keys when you urchase Visual Navigation Suite or Admiral. If you wish to transfer the software to a new computer, please contact us first and we will guide you through the steps needed to transfer your Site Key registration.

I’ve just installed Nobeltec Navigation Software for the first time, but whenever I try to open it I get an illegal operation about TCWFCAT.EXE causing a page fault in Chartutil.dll. What do I do?

This usually happens when a device or software is tying up the parallel (printer) port on your computer.

  1. Disconnect any removable drives (CD, DVD, etc.) that are connected to the parallel port on the PC and restart the computer.
  2. If you have installed printer or scanner software, there may be software loading when Windows® starts that is interfering with the parallel port. In these cases, you need to refer to the printer/scanner documentation and disable the software that is loading.
  3. If your computer does not have a parallel port, make sure that the computer is in a docking station that does have a parallel port.
  4. If you can’t find anything that could be causing the parallel port to be in use, verify (carefully) in the system BIOS that the parallel port is using ECP mode with an I/O address of 378.

Answers to common questions regarding electronic charts.

Why do my Passport Charts lack detail? Why is there is no written information on them?
What is Horizontal Datum and how does it affect me while I am using charts?
Is there a way to increase the panning and zooming speed when I am viewing charts?
Why do my raster charts have different text sizes when quilted?
I purchased chart regions in Canada (Passport Deluxe Canada). When I'm using these Canadian Passport charts and I move my cursor into Canada, why do I lose detail?
Why can’t I use the Quickview or CrystalView with Passport Charts?
Why don’t my charts line up evenly when quilted?
I just purchased your software along with a few Passport regions. After I installed the software I noticed that I don’t have coverage for those areas.
What are Photo charts and Perspective Photos?
What are the huge red circles all over the chart? How do I get rid of them?
When I am using quilting, some charts cover waterways that I am navigating as if they were covered by land. How can I fix this?
How can I change the depth units on my Passport Charts from meters to feet or fathoms etc.?
Can I update my Passport Charts?
Why do my Passport Charts lack detail? Why is there is no written information on them?
If you have used our software in the past, you may be accustomed to Raster charts. Learning your new Passport Vector Charts may be somewhat time consuming, but it doesn’t need to be. All of the information on Raster Charts should be found on the Passport equivalent, but in a different way. Passport uses “Symbols” to display information. Each “Symbol” has a “Tool tip” (hold your mouse cursor for 1-2 seconds over a symbol to view the Tool tip). The Tool tip will provide the same information that you usually see scattered all over Raster charts. Also make sure that the chart is as close to native scale (100% zoom level) as possible.
What is Horizontal Datum and how does it affect me while I am using charts?
Horizontal datum is the mathematical model of the Earth used to calculate the coordinates on any map, chart, or survey system. There are various different datums used by chart manufacturers. If you are using Nobeltec Navigation Software with quilting enabled, there's a low level possibility that you have charts with different datums quilted together. If this happens, you may notice that land features do not line up or your boat is in the wrong position. The workaround to this is to always use the most updated charts when you navigate and to make sure that your charts all use the same datum (preferably NAD83 or WGS84). Some GPS systems have the ability to output lat/long position in various datums (if your GPS does support datums, use this feature with caution).
Is there a way to increase the panning and zooming speed when I am viewing charts?
You will notice the largest increases in speed when you are viewing charts form your hard drive rather then your CD or DVD drive. Disabling quilting and chart rotation will also significantly increase speed.
Why do my Raster charts have different text sizes when quilted?
Unlike Passport Vector Charts, Raster charts have a fixed size for detail. This means that there is no way to change the size of the info on the charts, basically one size fits all. When navigating with quilting on, make sure when changing charts that the new chart is as close to native scale (100% zoom level) as possible.
I purchased chart regions in Canada (Passport Deluxe Canada). When I'm using these Canadian Passport charts and I move my cursor into Canada, why do I lose detail?
There are two different types of electronic charts that are available for use with Nobeltec Navigation Software. The first, Passport Deluxe Canadian charts, which are the same type of charts but are licensed through NDI. These will quilt your standard Passport charts in the US and you will not see a difference in quality. However, if you are using the BSB formatted raster versions of these charts, it is possible that you have them loaded, please note, raster charts and Passport World Charts cannot be quilted together. If you are certain that you have raster charts loaded, you will need to click on the 'R' button ('R' for raster charts) on your toolbar when you want to view your Canadian raster charts. Learn more about switching between chart types in the User's Guide.
Why can’t I use the Quickview or CrystalView with Passport Charts?
Passport Charts are so clear and easy to use that these two features are unnecessary. We may add support for the Quickview window with Passport Charts in the future.
Why don’t my charts line up evenly when quilted?
This usually happens when the scale of two quilted charts vary by a large amount. When navigating with quilting on, make sure when changing charts that the new chart is as close to native scale (100% zoom level) as possible. Also, make sure that the quilted charts have the same horizontal datum.

I just purchased your software along with a few Passport regions. After I installed the software I noticed that I don’t have coverage for those areas.
Did you install the charts after installing the software? If not, you must use the Chart Table Install feature along with your 20-digit Chart Permit(s) to load the charts. If you’ve already done this and your Passport Charts still aren’t listed on the Open tab of the Chart Table, please contact technical support: support@jeppesen.com

What are Photo charts and Perspective Photos?
Photo charts are raster scans of aerial photos and perspective photos are similar to postcard images of harbors and thoroughfares. Both are compatible with Nobeltec Navigation Software, although neither are included in our software bundle. Photo regions can be purchased from the Jeppesen Marine Sales Department at: sales@Photo charts are raster scans of aerial photos and perspective photos are similar to postcard images of harbors and thoroughfares. Both are compatible with Nobeltec Navigation Software, although neither are included in our software bundle. What are the large red circles all over the chart? How do I get rid of them?
The large red circles are called 'sectors' and are used as navigational aids that allow you view the angles of lights. You may remove them by clicking on the 'Lights and Buoys Display' button (on the toolbar) and choosing 'Sectors Off.' Sectors are only available on Passport Vector Charts.
When I am using quilting, some charts cover waterways that I am navigating appear as if they were covered by land. How can I fix this?
You should remove any charts that may be interfering from the quilt. To remove a specific chart, simply right click the interfering chart and choose “Remove [chart] From Quilt”.
How can I change the depth units on my Passport Charts from meters to feet or fathoms etc.?
To change units while using Passport Charts, select TOOLS | OPTIONS | UNITS. Note: Depth unit changes do not affect raster charts.
Can I update my Passport Charts?
Passport Charts are updated quarterly. The issue number of the Folio (collection of World Charts, I.e., WF 36) indicates when a particular set of charts were released. Jeppesen Marine’s system of updating Passport Charts to the latest folio is available for reference via the Nobeltec Store.

What’s the difference between real-time tracking and upload/download?
Why does my boat always point towards true north?
Why does my ETA always say N/A when I have an active route?
I’ve hooked up my Autopilot and verified it is receiving NMEA data. What data should I be sending to it?
What pins of the 9-pin or 25-pin serial port do I need to use when connecting my devices?
Where can I find information on how to decipher NMEA?
A message keeps popping up that says “Invalid Checksum …”, can I disable this message?
Is my GPS supported for real-time tracking?
Visual Navigation Suite and Admiral support real-time tracking for any GPS that outputs NMEA 0183 ver. 2.0 or higher
Back to top
Is my GPS supported for upload/download?
Please see http://www.nobeltec.com/support/GPSSupport.asp for a list of GPS models that are supported for upload/download.
Why does it say “No GPS” when I have my GPS connected?

This could be a result of several things:

Make sure that your GPS is setup to output NMEA 0183 1.5 or higher at 4800 baud.

Also verify you have selected the INPUT PORT in Nobeltec Navigation Software under TOOLS | OPTIONS | PORTS CONFIGURE. If you are unsure of what port your GPS is connected to, you should use the PORT TEST (START | PROGRAMS | NOBELTEC | PORT TEST).

Finally, make sure that the wiring is correct and that your GPS has a valid satellite fix (or is in simulator mode).

What’s the difference between Real-Time Tracking and upload/download?

Real-Time Tracking allows you to view your vessel’s position in real time. As our software receives data from your GPS, it will update your boat’s position on the chart.

Upload/download is the process of sending/receiving routes, waypoints and tracks between our software and your GPS. Upload/download is not supported for all GPS’s (see manual for supported models).

Why does my boat always point towards true north?
If the heading of the boat is always 0 degrees, your GPS may not be outputting heading or course over ground information. Refer to the GPS documentation to verify that your GPS is outputting the latest version of NMEA and that heading (HDG, HDT, HDM) and/or course over ground (COG) is being sent by your GPS.
Why does my ETA always say N/A when I have an active route?
The software is not receiving any speed over ground from your GPS. Refer to the GPS documentation to verify that your GPS is outputting the latest version of NMEA, and that speed over ground (SOG) is being sent by your GPS.
I’ve hooked up my Autopilot and verified it is receiving NMEA data. What data should I be sending to it?
Different Autopilots want to hear different NMEA strings, but we suggest a solution that is very basic and works with most autopilots. Choose TOOLS | OPTIONS | PORTS CONFIGURE | CONFIGURE AUTOPILOT. Choose to send TRUE bearings along with the NMEA sentence APB. If you are only using our software to drive your Autopilot, make sure that you are not using any repeater ports (TOOLS | OPTIONS | PORTS CONFIGURE)
What pins of the 9-pin or 25-pin serial port do I need to use when connecting my devices?

The pin out of the needed connections is as follows:

9 PIN SERIAL:
PIN 2: Receive Data
PIN 3: Transmit Data
PIN 5: Signal Ground

25 PIN SERIAL:
PIN 2: Transmit Data
PIN 3: Receive Data
PIN 7: Signal Ground

Where can I find information on how to decipher NMEA?
Please consult the following web page: http://www.nmea.org/pub/0183/index.html.
A message keeps popping up that says “Invalid Checksum …”, can I disable this message?
A checksum warning will appear when Nobeltec Navigation Software computes a different amount of characters in a NMEA sentence then the GPS says it sent. Erratic grounding between the GPS and the PC usually causes this. To disable checksum warning messages, choose TOOLS | OPTIONS | PORTS CONFIGURE and uncheck “Report Checksum Discrepancies”.

We have adjustable night and twilight color schemes you can use. To enable these, select WINDOW | SET SCREEN INTENSITY
Back to top
Why does my Nobeltec Navigation Software take as long as 10 minutes to shutdown?
The common most cause of this problem is a large objects database that contains a lot of track information. The solution is to remove any previous tracks created on your voyages. To remove tracks, right click the track line and choose “Delete." If you want to save the tracks, make a backup before you delete them by using the “Export to Text File” feature, found in the File pull down menu.
Why do I get a message that says “Error 1 opening file x:\index\regx.nos” when I try to load my Nobeltec Navigation Software with a BSB chart CD in my CD drive?
When Nobeltec Navigation Software auto-loads the CD, it scans all of the files on the CD, including files that appear to be valid charts. Sometimes these files are text files and not actually valid charts. When this happens, you will receive an error stating the program could not load these files.  This error commonly occurs when using BSB Edition 2.0 or higher CD-ROMs.

Why do some lights and objects on my Passport Charts only appear as big black squares?
Items may appear as black squares on Passport Charts if your video color depth is set to 256 colors or lower. To resolve this, you need to raise the color depth of your desktop to 16-bit color or higher. To change your video card's color depth, right click your desktop background and select 'Properties.' Within the 'Display Properties,' choose the 'Settings' tab and change the 'Colors' setting to 16 bit or higher. Refer to your video card documentation for more information.
